Why You Should Buy College Textbooks on eBay

Updated on September 25, 2012

eBay Love It!

I first found out about ebay years ago from my daughter who brought her textbooks online. I was totally shocked to learn she found such good deals on textbooks on eBay. So, I said what the heck I will try playing around with eBay. After talking with a few other people I found out that selling books online through eBay was a good way to make some quick cash online. I tried it started with my old college textbook, and was I shocked they sold fast. After this I started looking around to see what other old books I had to sale on ebay alot of them sold, but some did not. But textbooks on eBay is a complete shoe in. Not matter what the subjuct buying textbooks on eBay is so much cheaper than buying through a regular bookstore or at half.com. In particular college textbooks for education classes are a awesome buy, and people hunt for these textbooks like crazy.

And let's not even mention textbooks for medical students, and nursing students those are hot ticket textbooks, and are snatched up fast. If you are a nursing student and need a textbook hop on over to eBay first before you go anywhere else first.

Word of Caution

Please, check, and recheck before you bid on a textbook that the book you are bidding on IS the right edition for your class. You do not want to make a big boo boo, and purchase the book and discover when you receive it the book is the wrong edition. I am telling this is a very easy mistake to make. Got say this again, textbooks will look like the right one when you look at the cover, but I am here to tell you there are some big changes on the inside if you do not have the correct version and/or edition for your class. I have seen students come to class with that I have the right book look, and find out its the WRONG edition! Even classes online I am telling you the right edition is a big issue. Even in graduate classes people get the wrong book, and there a big online forum going online in class about who has the right book, and what's the difference between the (i.e. 5th ed. and the 6th ed.) there is a serious difference especially for students studying education, medicine, overall just double check.

Purchasing textbooks on eBay should not be a problem, but checking out who you are buying the textbook from is a very good idea. Most shoppers, and/or bidders do take a look at a seller's scorecard, or feedback rating. It is pretty much a no brainer if the feedback is good it is a good seller. There are dishonest people who do sale on eBay so just check who you purchase from before bidding. One other note of caution of course everyone wants a dirt cheap price so you will have those bottom line bidders, and you really, really need a book you will have to make a bid a little higher to try and win the bid to knock out the folks who are trying to get a textbook for the smallest possible price.

How Much You Will Save

I can tell you the savings are huge when buying your textbook on eBay. I was surprised to find I saved like 40% from the textbooks being sold in the school bookstores. It's amazing how expensive college textbooks can be for students struggling to handle tuition, housing, food, and other costs. For many, the best option is to buy used textbooks, but even that option isn't always available. For a popular required class, the availability of textbooks might be limited within a particular area. That's why the option to buy textbooks online is one every student should seriously consider. There are three primary reasons to purchase textbooks via the internet: price, availability, and extra information. Price is one of the primary reasons that students buy textbooks online. There are two reasons that the price for such purchases is far more attractive than traditional sales. First, the typical online location is free from a great deal of the overhead required for a typical brick and mortar store. This allows them to offer pricing at a far greater advantage to the student than the college bookstore or local alternatives. In addition, the inherent barriers developed because local bookstores and university sponsored stores have long-standing relationships provides a great incentive to online retailers to provide a greatly reduce price.

Price is not the only issue, however. Online sales of course materials often offer a great many more choices than a college bookstore or local alternatives. Often, only one particular format is available locally while online textbook sales can include paperback, hardback, and various ebook formats. These various formats not only allow for a student to learn from information provided in a form most comfortable to the student but also allow for less expensive products in many cases. Paperbacks and ebooks are significantly less expense than hard-bound texts.

Finally, many students find that when they buy textbooks online, the college textbooks are accompanied with a great deal of other available information including notes, supporting materials, study guides, and other aids that can assist a student with the learning process. A college student can therefore benefit from the collective research and study of many other students and professionals in the particular areas covered in the course. The additional information can conveniently provide additional resources to a student, saving time and money during the completion of the course.

College textbooks are a necessary and significant expense, but buying textbooks online has never been easier, and the options available to students have never been greater. Prior to purchasing course materials in a local bookstore or at the university shop, students should attempt to see about online options for their textbook needs.
